  • Trio nabbed for stealing gold-plated copper balls from Prez House
The Sri Lanka Navy has found the weapon that the Sri Lanka Police Department alleged was stolen from a soldier in the Army after he was assaulted during the protest at the Polduwa Junction near Parliament on 13 July.  In a statement made in this regard yesterday (25), the Police said that divers from the Navy had found the said weapon in the Diyawanna Oya, near the Samanala Bridge in Rajagiriya. The statement claimed that a protestor had stolen the Type 56 assault rifle from an Army soldier, after assaulting him, during the protest held on 13 July near Parliament.  A protest was held on 13 July in front of Parliament, two days prior to the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. His resignation followed after a large-scale, islandwide protest on 9 July, which eventually led to the occupation of the Presidential Residence, the Presidential Secretariat, and the Temple Trees by protestors. However, several key protestors connected to the “GotaGoGama” protest site at the Galle Face Green have denied being a part of the protest in front of Parliament on 13 July.  Meanwhile, in a statement made on 24 July, the Police said that three residents from Rajagiriya have been arrested for stealing 40 gold-plated copper balls used at the President’s House. Thousands of citizens from all over the country lined up to tour the Residence following the protest on 9 July. The Residence has since been handed back to the authorities. The arrested suspects have been handed over by the Welikada Police to the special Police team investigating offences related to the Presidential Residence.
